Oh, to be an eagle ray gliding through crystal blue waters. With their wing-like fins and long, whip-like tails, eagle rays look like they’re flying underwater. These striking rays belong to a family of about 20 species, which can be found all over the world! Eagle rays are bottom-feeding carnivores with specialized flat teeth perfect for crushing crabs and clams. They use their snouts to help them dig through the sand for hidden prey. Eagle rays have few predators, aside from some sharks, like tiger sharks and hammer heads. And while they’re generally not aggressive, some species have venomous spines on their tails for defence. One of the more curious behaviours eagle rays are known for is leaping right out of the water! Scientists still aren’t sure why, but the most common theory is parasite removal. Other possibilities are that they leap to communicate, escape predators, or maybe it’s just for fun! However you interpret it, we think eagle rays are pure underwater magic. Video...
