What’s better than a beer story from the American Revolution on the 4th of July!?
In 1782, the colonists were gaining ground and British-occupied Charleston was about to fall to the colonial resistance. Everyone was evacuating and grabbing their most prized possessions, boarding ships and heading to safer ports.
Eight of those ships didn’t make it, and ended up crashing while trying to enter the safety of St. Augustine’s harbor.
In 2013, Lighthouse Archaeologists found one of those ships and some of those prized possessions.
One of the more interesting artifacts was a beer tap. One of our Lighthouse Archaeologists wrote, “What is notable about this piece is that it is the whole tap apparatus, including an integrated handle. In fact, the handle was even found in the open position. This could mean either it was packed away for flat storage, or that it was fully open and in use.
