Iowa state officials are warning drivers to be aware of potential hazards on the road this summer — buckling highways caused by summer heat. Ankeny started to see streets buckle from high temperatures in June, said city spokesperson Amy Baker. The street had to be closed to one lane on June 21 before being fixed on June 26. Concrete naturally expands and contracts, but if the concrete expands too much, sections push against themselves until they pop up, said Bob Ellis, district maintenance manager with the Iowa Department of Transportation. Ellis, who covers central Iowa, said officials get six to 10 reports of roads buckling each year. Ellis has seen four reports of roads buckling in recent days.
