“I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine.” -Psalm 50:11 Everything is the LORD’s. Every creature, every movement, every breath belongs to Him. He is not in need, and He is not served by human hands. There is nothing we can give Him that He does not already possess. God rebukes the idea that sacrifices or rituals sustain Him. The same truth speaks to us now. Outward religion, good behavior, Christian values, none of these can earn us favor with God. Even the most devoted life cannot secure what only grace can give. Yet there is hope in this. Because all belongs to Him, you can continue to rely on Him for guidance, security, presence, etc. He knows what everything needs because it is all His and He cares for it all. A bird doesn’t know what it needs, it may have ideas about things but often times they aren’t the best or brightest thing.
