🌠 🪐🔭 Aomawa Shields's research is truly out of this world! The UC Irvine astrobiologist uses computer modeling to gauge extraterrestrial life possibilities. One such theoretical idea that intrigues her are potentially habitable Earth-like planets, also known as exoplanets, that are still too far away to observe in any detail with our most powerful telescopes. In addition to earning a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrobiology, Shields also holds an M.F.A. from UCLA. She teaches a popular class at UC Irvine called Life in the Universe, which explores the effect of popular culture on our perceptions of extraterrestrial life. Shields, who is one of just 26 Black female astrophysicists in the U.S., founded Rising Stargirls to help young girls from diverse backgrounds comprehend the cosmos using theater, writing and visual arts.
