Scripps Mercy turns 135 today. What began in July 9, 1890, as a five-bed dispensary above a men’s clothing store has grown into one of San Diego’s most trusted hospitals. Led by Sister Mary Michael Cummings and the Sisters of Mercy, the original St. Joseph’s Dispensary was founded with just $50 and a mission to serve. Today, that mission of healing, hope and compassion continues at Scripps Mercy Hospital, with campuses in San Diego and Chula Vista.
