Unlike streets named after people or politicians, Nonconnah Blvd holds weight from way before Memphis was even Memphis. “Nonconnah” is believed to come from a Choctaw or Chickasaw word, possibly meaning “long creek” or “crooked stream.” This ain’t just a name — it’s a piece of Native history woven into our city’s streets. Nonconnah Creek is one of Memphis’ major waterways. It starts in East Memphis, runs through South Memphis, and flows all the way into North Mississippi. Back in the day, this creek was used by Indigenous tribes for settlement, farming, and travel — long before highways or neighborhoods came to be.
