The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division has filed a lawsuit to enforce Title IX, aiming to protect female student athletes in California from what it describes as unfair competition and reckless endangerment due to male participation on female high-school sports teams.
U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said her department notified the California Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) that they were in violation of Title IX for "allowing men to compete in women's sports."
When the state refused to comply, she referred the case to the DOJ.
United States Attorney General Pam Bondi said, "We will protect girls in girls' sports."
