Carnivore species deserve the right to live.
Yet Alaska wildlife managers are proposing to shoot and kill bears from helicopters in a misguided effort to help declining caribou herds in western Alaska.
Even after the state killed almost 200 bears over the last three years, the area's Mulchatna caribou herd has shown no signs of recovery.
That's because research has shown that disease and lack of food ā not predation ā are causing the herd's decline.
Killing more bears won't make things better for caribou.
In fact, this ecological disaster is only made worse by scapegoating wolves, bears, and other carnivores who help control disease naturally by feeding on weak, sick animals.
We are urging the Alaska Board of Game to listen to science and reject this plan to kill more bears in the state. You can help!
