With the 2025 MLB Draft coming up this Sunday, we throw our
#wacflashback to the first-ever pick in the MLB Draft’s history: Arizona State’s Rick Monday!
Monday helped ASU win the 1965 national championship and was the Sporting News National Player of the Year. Monday holds the distinction of being the first WAC player drafted by a Major League Baseball Club.
In 1965, the year of the inaugural MLB Draft, the Kansas City Athletics selected Monday with the first overall pick. Monday played 19 seasons in the majors, was a two-time all-star (1968, 1978) and a World Series champion with the 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers.
