Since Will Gillen of Bellevue was 10, his parents Dominic and Shelley Gillen have advocated for legalization of treatment alternatives to the buffet of drugs that doctors can and do prescribe. The parents call their son the origin of the medical cannabis movement in Nebraska, which after almost 13 years of pursuing legalization garnered 71% voter approval on a statewide ballot last year. That vote coupled with Legislative Bill 677 from State Sen. Ben Hansen of Blair has put medical cannabis within reach of the patients who have advocated with their caregivers and supporters.
