California Theater Consortium, or CTC, development partner Gilbane Development Company pulled out of a planned redevelopment of the historic California Theatre in June, putting the project back in square one. In June 2024, the Berkeley City Council approved the theater’s demolition and the proposed construction of an 18-story multiuse apartment complex in its place. The theater closed due to challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to revitalize the arts scene in Downtown Berkeley, CTC, a group of local arts organizations and project partners, advocated to maintain the location as a space for performing arts, according to CTC co-founder and co-project manager Jennifer Boesing.
