This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of #LiveAid, the 1985 benefit concert organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. @tompettyofficial added “American Girl” to their set at the last minute, when they realized that it would be the first song broadcast from Philadelphia after the finale of the show in London. Beyond Philadelphia and London, other concerts inspired by Live Aid were held on this day in the Soviet Union, Canada, Japan, Yugoslavia, Austria, Australia, and West Germany.
