If you're over the age of 28, Notopoulos' guess is you're confused by this question. Of course you say "hello" when picking up the phone.
But Gen Z — a generation raised in a post-landline universe — may disagree. They expect you — the person calling — to speak first.
Older people, such as Notopoulos, are aghast! She asks, "Are young people cooked?" But perhaps it's OK to form new etiquette around phones. They haven't been around that long, anyway.
