From being recognised as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama at two years old to winning the Nobel Peace Prize, these are the key events in the life the 14th Dalai Lama as he turned 90.
Born on 6 July 1935, in a small village just outside the current boundaries of Tibet, he was enthroned before he turned four.
When he was 15, troops of China’s newly-installed Communist government marched into Tibet, making the Dalai Lama flee on foot with his followers. After arriving in India, he established the Tibetan government-in-exile.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his consistent opposition to the use of violence in his quest for Tibetan self-rule.
Beijing continues to view him as a dangerous separatist, though he has said his goal is for Tibetan autonomy rather than independence.
And in his 90th birthday week, which began on Monday and will conclude on 6 of July, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader confirmed he would have a successor.
