Whale biologist Carrie Newell grabbed her camera, launched her boat and headed offshore after hearing fishermen report massive whale spouts over the radio. Roughly 3 to 4 miles off Depoe Bay, she found four blue whales feeding on dense krill — an exceptionally rare nearshore sighting in Oregon waters. One whale appeared emaciated, with its scapula visible beneath the skin. See more of Newell’s photos and read the full report by clicking the link in our bio. Photo 3: A Garmin fish finder aboard Carrie Newell’s research vessel shows a dense band of krill at a depth of about 222 feet. Krill are the only food blue whales eat. --Reporting by Mark_W_Graves --Photography courtesy of Carrie Newell / whale_research_ecoexcursions #bluewhale #depoebay #oregoncoast #whalewatching #WhaleResearchEcoExcursions #wildlifephotography #pnwwildlife #raresighting #marinescience #oregonlive #oregonwi...
