Human remains have been found in what is left of the historic R.O. Cramer building in Albia after the building went up in flames early on the morning of Monday, July 14. The Albia Fire Department received a call around 8:30 a.m. alerting them to a fire on the south side of the Courthouse Square on Washington Avenue East, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The Cramer Building houses businesses at the street level and apartments on its upper level. The fire is now under control, but firefighters continue to battle hotspots, Albia Fire Chief John Freshwater said Tuesday. The historic building is considered a total loss.
