In the heart of Carnegie Mellon University’s campus in Oakland is an unassuming fence, weighed down by countless layers of paint. This week, the otherwise unremarkable structure found itself at the center of a battle over free expression.
The fence became a sort of proxy for the fight between students who didn’t want President Donald Trump, Sen. Dave McCormick and other political and business leaders to gather for an event on the storied campus and a university administration trying to maintain decorum at a high profile moment.
Just hours before the Energy and Innovation Summit, Carnegie Mellon students converged on the cherished university landmark Monday night with white paint to proclaim “shame on you” and “no rapists on our campus.”
On Tuesday morning, students woke up to a blank canvas. University administration had painted over the message with black paint.
