For Earth Day I wanted to share a favorite photo of Mother Nature in all her grand splendor so I dug through my film photo archives and came up with this: made on Lakota land looking out from Black Elk Peak on the Black Hills and Great Plains beyond them. The highest peak in South Dakota, Black Elk Peak (or Hiŋháŋ Káǧa, meaning owl-maker in Lakota) was renamed this in 2016 for a celebrated Oglala Sioux holy man to pay homage to a people and land unjustly stolen by the US Government. The peak rests on land sacred to the Lakota (and Cheyenne before them) and is now protected within the Black Elk Wilderness. The unique mix of craggy rock spires and massive boulders spread among ponderosa pine makes this one truly beautiful landscape that should be high on the must-visit list for all nature lovers.
