The Newfoundland government recently approved new licenses for salmon farming giant Mowi to expand operations — despite years of community resistance, scientific warnings, and a legacy of environmental damage.
Locals have been fighting for over two decades to protect these same waters with a marine protected area. Instead, they’re watching more fjords handed over to an industry linked to disease outbreaks, mass fish deaths, and the shocking pollution of coastlines with plastic, nets, rope, and styrofoam. And instead of holding the industry accountable, the government is rewarding them.
The industry is using only a fraction of the licenses they already hold, and production has been in decline for years. If they can’t manage the sites they have, why allow them to create more?
