THOUGHTS?!🚨NC House Bill 318 – What You Need to Know🚨
A new bill in North Carolina could change how jails and detention centers handle people suspected of being in the country illegally:
🕒 Jails would be required to hold someone up to 48 hours longer if
@ICEgov asks and a judge approves. The current law, House Bill 10, requires a person be held 48 hours after a detainer is received. With HB 318, jails will be mandated to hold the person in question an additional 48 hours when he or she would otherwise be eligible for release.
🧑⚖ A judge must first confirm the person is who ICE says they are.
🚔More felony charges, including drunk driving, would trigger immigration status checks.
📞Jails must notify ICE within 2 hours of when someone would have been released.
Should HB 318 pass, Sheriff McFadden (
@sugarfreetalk) will follow the law, as he always has and continue working to protect ALL citizens of Mecklenburg County.
