Filming scalloped hammerheads is an exercise in persistence, timing, and trust in your gear. Off the coast of a remote Pacific island, we set out to capture these elusive, critically endangered sharks in the deeper, darker layers of the ocean where their most defining life stages unfold.
Scalloped hammerheads are one of the most uniquely evolved shark species, equipped with nearly 360° vision and a head shape designed for precision hunting. They’re also among the most overfished, and their numbers have dropped dramatically in just a few decades.
We used the RED DSMC2 GEMINI 5K paired with GATES PRO Explore housing (gates.underwater) to navigate low-light zones far beyond recreational dive depths. With rebreathers and extended bottom time, we waited through surging currents and heavy wind, hoping to document shark behavior few have ever seen.
