A year ago, I didn’t know anything about the history of Hawaii or how it came to be. I didn’t know about how the US government over threw the long-standing monarchy or how the Dole family (yes, the same Dole that you get your pineapples from) pushed for it to become a state only for pure economic gain. But I am thankful that so many places on the island are preserved and protected so that people like me can continue to become educated in the world around us.
