As a part of South Asian Heritage Month, we highlight two objects on display in RCGP’s current Health Inequalities exhibition. These two breast softies were created by Nubian Skin in partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.
A breast softie is a lightweight fabric prosthesis that women with breast cancer are often provided after a mastectomy to wear in their bra. Until 2022 when the pilot project, funded by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, launched, there were no breast softies in skin tones other than a pale pink.
South Asian people in the UK are statistically more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a later stage. Additionally, according survey by Cancer Research UK found that women from ethnic minority (defined as anyone who self-identifies as being from an ethnic group other than white) backgrounds were more likely to report they didn’t know any warning signs and symptoms of cancer compared to white women (23% vs 12%).
