An acclaimed poet, novelist, and script writer. James Baldwin often wrote fiction pieces with the elements of the complexities of race, sexuality, and class. His works fell parallel to the movements of his time: Civil Rights Movement and the Gay Liberation Movement. As a gay, Black man born in the South, Baldwin dealt with homophobia and racism, which shaped his perspective and literary direction. As a staunt activist in the Civil Rights Movement, he was simultaneously ostracized because of his sexuality. Although he wasn't "out", the fact he wrote about homosexuality in his literature made some activists shut him out of the inner circle of the movement.
