Reaching up to 800 pounds and 8 feet tall when standing, grizzly bears boast tremendous size and physical strength and have almost no natural enemies. Or just one — humans. Their latest human threat: two anti-science, anti-conservation bills set to advance by the House of Natural Resources Committee that target grizzly bears and lead ammo safeguards. H.R. 281 and H.R. 556 would allow for greatly expanded lead pollution on public lands, and remove federal protections from grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, respectively. “Whether it’s allowing people and animals to be poisoned by lead at the whim of the gun lobby or ripping protections from Yellowstone’s cherished grizzly bears, these bills mark a new low, even for Republicans,” said Stephanie Kurose, our deputy director of government affairs.
