It’s served as a house, a music venue, an art-house cinema, a studio for NBC, and even a church. But writer and comedian Bernard Sahlins had a different dream for the Studebaker.
In 1956, when this photo was taken, he founded the Studebaker Theatre Company with the intention of creating a permanent repertory company that featured stellar performances with local Chicago talent.
Although they put on several classic and contemporary productions over their short tenure, financial difficulties forced the company to close in 1957.
Spoiler alert: the Studebaker did not remain shuttered, and after a few transitional decades we’ve come back better than ever as a jewel of Chicago’s theatre scene.
