UC San Diego men’s basketball head coach Eric Olen has been named the next head coach at the University of New Mexico. Olen spent 21 years on the Triton sideline, joining as an assistant coach in 2004 before becoming head coach in 2013. Under his watch, UCSD transitioned from Division II to Division I, winning the Big West title and reaching March Madness in its first year of postseason eligibility. Shortly after the move was announced, the Tritons promoted associate head coach Clint Allard to the top job. The former Triton starter first joined as an assistant coach in 2008 and has served as associate head coach since 2014. He notably developed the Tritons’ unique defensive scheme, which frustrated offenses last season and played a critical role in the team’s success. Story by Alan Zhang, Senior Staff Writer.
