Now in its 9th year at the CalgaryStampede, Relay Racing (also known as Indian Relay) stole the spotlight, with packed crowds and fans of all backgrounds stunned to learn this thrilling sport has existed for centuries.
For nearly 500 years, Indigenous Plains tribes have raced bareback horses. It entered mainstream rodeo culture about 40 years ago, but during this years Calgary Stampede, the buzz was undeniable. ⚡️
Horses are painted in family colors, riders often wear regalia, and the high-speed transitions between sprinting horses are electric. This year, the relay took place nightly after the Chuckwagon races.
