FIRE CREW: Lolo Hotshots The lolo_hotshots, rooted in Missoula, MT, emerged from the Blister Rust control crews (BRC), integral to early fire suppression history. Established in 1961 as one of the original 9 Interregional crews, they initially focused on forest health mitigation in Blister Rust-infected areas. Their expertise led to frequent requests for fire assistance beyond their region. In 1961, to meet nationwide demand for skilled and mobile suppression teams, the Forest Service established Interregional Fire Suppression Crews. Region 1 (Northern Rockies) hosted two such crews: one at Slate Creek, Nez Perce National Forest (now defunct), and the other at Ninemile Ranger District, Lolo National Forest, near Missoula, MT. Initially based at Ninemile (1961-1970), the crew relocated to St. Regis Work Center in 1971 before returning to Ninemile due to logistical challenges.
