Valle Nevado covers 1,939 acres (785 ha), making it one of the largest ski resorts in the Southern Hemisphere—and the biggest lift-served area in Chile. The entire footprint lies above treeline, so you’ll find wide-open alpine terrain with few natural obstacles. Outside the marked trails, however, the slopes are neither patrolled nor avalanche-controlled, as is common across South America.
With a low point of 9,383 ft (2,860 m) and a base village at 9,925 ft (3,025 m), Valle Nevado boasts the highest base elevation in the Southern Hemisphere. The altitude improves snow quality but poses a challenge for guests who aren’t acclimated to high elevations. Santiago sits more than 7,000 ft (2,100 m) below the resort, leaving no convenient mid-altitude stopover.
Even seasoned skiers and riders should plan to hydrate aggressively and take more breaks than usual.
