Zermatt excels when it comes to lifts, facilities, and jaw-dropping views—and it’s far less crowded than many of North America’s busiest resorts. But when it comes to snow and terrain, it simply doesn’t stack up against top destinations across the pond.
While @zermatt.matterhorn does get some powder days, snowfall totals fall well short of Europe’s snowiest resorts. That said, it’s one of the few places in the world with reliable summer skiing, earning it a solid 6 for season resiliency.
The full Zermatt ski area offers an impressive 360 kilometers of slopes and over 14,400 acres of skiable terrain, giving it a 10 for size. There are a few freeride zones and off-piste lines for those who know where to look, but truly challenging terrain is limited, earning the resort a 4 for difficulty.
If you’re after a scenic, luxurious lifestyle ski vacation, Zermatt is an excellent choice. But if your priority is raw, big-mountain skiing, you’ll likely want to look elsewhere.
