While its Rocky Mountain location might suggest abundant snowfall, @SunValley often falls short of expectations. The resort averages less than 200 inches of snow per season—significantly less than many competing destinations. This issue is compounded by modest elevation, with the mountain sitting thousands of feet lower than many of its Rocky Mountain counterparts. As a result, snow preservation is less reliable.
Though Sun Valley can deliver excellent powder conditions immediately after a storm, the snow tends to deteriorate quickly, often becoming crusty after just a few days without new accumulation. This is particularly true in the sun-exposed high alpine zones. While much of the skiable terrain is north-facing, the mountain overall faces east, and it’s not uncommon to see bare rock on the unseeable, south-facing ridgelines.
The result is a resort where snow cover can feel inconsistent—sometimes even artificial or out of place—which detracts from the overall experience.
