Unlike nearly every other ski resort, @zermatt.matterhorn Switzerland offers slopes that are directly accessible by train—and not just one, but two distinct railways.
The first is the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway, which climbs over 4,800 vertical feet to a summit observation deck. The panoramic views of the Matterhorn and surrounding glaciers are more than worth the ride, and there are excellent photo opportunities at the top.
The second is a subterranean funicular that connects downtown Zermatt to the Rothorn/Sunnegga area of the resort via a steeply inclined tunnel. The Zermatt–Sunnegga funicular might be one of the most unique ways to ascend a mountain anywhere in the world.
If you're an infrastructure enthusiast, it's worth grabbing a seat at the front or back of the train for a view down the tunnel. The ride is surprisingly fast, running on five-minute headways.
