When Parrish Mayor Jared Cagle saw an opioid overdose firsthand, he was at a loss for what to do. According to the 2023 annual report by the Alabama Opioid Overdose and Addiction Council, Walker County had the third-highest rate of nonfatal opioid overdoses in the country. That was Cagle's first-ever experience with naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan. But it wouldn't be his last. Partnering with The Jubilee House, they launched Project HERO, the state's first Narcan vending machine. This harm reduction initiative gets naloxone into the hands of residents across the county.
