Today’s dysfunction isn’t destiny…
We’ve come to expect a certain kind of politics in this country — fueled by dysfunction, outrage, and endless partisan battles. Debates are less about solving problems and more about scoring points. Shouting gets attention. Compromise gets ignored. But it hasn’t always been this way.
There was a time when political opponents could debate fiercely and still treat each other with respect. When leaders showed up in moments of crisis not to posture, but to lead. When public service meant something beyond the next viral moment.
You can see it in the way past presidents sat together after leaving office, the way they spoke about responsibility, and the way they engaged with people who disagreed with them — not as enemies, but as fellow Americans.
This isn’t nostalgia for a perfect past. It’s a reminder that today’s political dysfunction isn’t inevitable.
We don’t need to go backward. But we do need to remember what forward can look like.
