Yes, red-crowned parrots in California are protected under state law, specifically California Fish and Game Code Section 3005, which prohibits the capturing of wild birds and mammals. Recently Temple Station deputies responded to a call for service regarding an unknown person capturing red-crowned parrots and placing them in cages. As a reminder, it is unlawful to capture, keep, posses, harm, and/or sell/trade red-crowned parrots, under various California State laws. Please do not capture these birds or any other wild birds as they may fall under a protected class and you could face fines and/or criminal charges. For more information please see the above mentioned CA Fish and Game Code along with code 3511 and CA Penal Code 597 (Animal Cruelty). If you suspect someone is harming or capturing any protected animal please contact us at 626-285-7171, CA Fish and Wildlife at 1-888-334-2258, or you can report it to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 1-844-FWS-TIPS (1-844-397-8477). ...
