Otis Hope Carey is a proud Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung man, professional surfer, and acclaimed contemporary artist. Filmed in his studio, Otis reflects on his journey through art and healing and what led him to pick up a paintbrush—and he's been telling powerful cultural stories through his art ever since. In this intimate piece, Otis explores the deep connection between his surfing and painting, describing how the rhythm of the ocean mirrors the flow of his brushstrokes. His works are spiritual, emotional, and rooted in culture—often inspired by shared totems like Gaagal (the ocean). From large-scale murals to his contribution in Thor: Love and Thunder, Otis shares what matters most: creating spaces for cultural connection and conversation. Through his creative journey, Otis opens doors for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to learn, listen, and grow—always led by purpose over recognition.
