The deep sea is hard to communicate. It’s dark, remote, and invisible to most of us — making it difficult to show, and even harder to protect. But this new documentary pulls it off so well! “Nodules” is an 18-minute film directed by Jason Jaacks (@jasonjaacks) and featuring journalist Clare Fieseler (@clarefieseler) as they follow two scientists whose discoveries could reshape how we think about the deep ocean. One uncovers oxygen production in total darkness. The other revisits the world’s oldest deep-sea mining experiment, with haunting results. As policymakers debate deep-sea mining this week, these findings are a timely reminder of why we need a precautionary pause on deep-sea mining.
