Why does it feel impossible to find a job? The February jobs report showed that unemployment is actually pretty low at 4%, compared to 10% during the 2008 recession and 25% during the Great Depression. So why does the job market still suck? Well, the thing is that just because unemployment is low doesn’t mean that employers are actively hiring in large numbers. In fact, right now the opposite is true: basically folks aren’t quitting and employers aren’t hiring. So it ends up feeling more stagnant than the numbers show. Also according to a recent study, the time it takes to hire someone is at an all time high, meaning you could be waiting over a month for that rejection letter. The truth is that there IS job growth overall but statistically speaking, you’re likely not in one the industries responsible for it.
