SHIPWRECK ARTIFACT CONSERVATION! Did you know? Our marine archaeologists discovered a grid iron (grill cooking grate) from a shipwreck found off the coast of St. Augustine — a 1782 British Loyalist Ship! This artifact has been on view since 2016 with many other items that were excavated from the ship (600 in all!) — cannon, carronade, ship bell, guns, cauldrons, silverware, shoe buckles, buttons, plates, etc. After several years, some artifacts need re-treatment to keep them in the best condition possible. This grid iron from the Wrecked! exhibit is an example of such an artifact. Our conservation lab staff keep all the artifacts restored for public viewing. The Wrecked! Exhibit is on view daily in the basement of the Keepers’ House. Museum hours are 10 AM to 6 PM seven days a week.
