Deering Estate is home to a specialized and protected ecosystem known as Mangrove Forests.
Three principal species of Mangrove inhabit the coastline at the Deering estate: Red, white, and black mangroves. Together they are responsible for protecting our coastlines and acting as a nursery for various imperiled species such as American Crocodiles and Diamondback Terrapins. These important species are a keystone to preserving the biodiversity of the mangroves.
At the Deering Estate, it is not uncommon to see the biodiversity of the Mangroves firsthand. Reptiles and amphibians are particularly fond of the shallow areas created by mangrove roots.
