One year since my brain surgery. Time to overshare. Awake craniotomy is a hard surgery. They put you under, then open your skull, and wake you up. They woke me up to make sure I could still use the limbs on my right side. We knew the thing in my head was pressing against the motor function area for my right side. We just weren't sure what it was or if removing it would affect my motor function further. When they got to it, we found out it was a tumor instead of a cyst. And as they started to remove it, I lost function of my right leg. When I said that, I remember the whole room going quiet. My surgeon came to speak to my neuro-physicist, and they discussed what to do. Ultimately, they asked me if it was okay to keep going. Of course, the answer was yes. But I remember this deep fear; was I ever going to walk again? Would I ever recover that ability to walk? Would I be stuck in a wheelchair the rest of my life? I was so glad for that next drip of anesthesia so I could go back to sleep...
