Standing on the shoulders of giants! We explore today because of the missions that came before us, building on their innovation and pushing further than ever before. Artifacts from some of NASA’s earliest groundbreaking achievements — made in low-Earth orbit, at the Moon, on Mars, and beyond — go back on display at the airandspacemuseum today: 👨‍🚀The Gemini IV spacecraft, from which Ed White made the first American spacewalk in 1965, and the Mercury Friendship 7 spacecraft that took John Glenn to orbit in 1962. 🌑 Lunar Module 2, configured to look like the Apollo 11 Moon landing’s lunar module Eagle. LM-2 on display was used in testing on Earth. 🔴 Viking Lander, the first U.S. spacecraft to reach the surface of Mars in 1976. The Viking Lander on display is a proof test article. 🛰️ Pioneer 10/11, the first probes to cross the solar system’s outer reaches, explored Jupiter and Saturn, and generated excitement about deep space exploration.
