The main street in our capital city is named after him but Daniel O’Connell has become a somewhat neglected figure in Irish history.
As Prof Patrick Geoghegan, Director of the Trinity Long Room Hub, explains here, O'Connell was hailed in his time as the Liberator and was a leading figure on the European political stage. A champion of Catholic emancipation in 19th century Ireland, he was also an inspiration for abolitionists in the United States and left an indelible mark on Europe in his fight for democracy and for civil and political freedoms.
To mark 250 years since his birth, the O’Connell 250 Symposium will explore Daniel O'Connell's life and global legacy. Organised and hosted by the Trinity Long Room Hub, leading historians, human rights experts, and public figures will come together to discuss and debate the lessons we can learn from the Liberator today.
