Mozart died at 12:55 on December 5 1791 at his home in Vienna. He was 35 years old. Up to just hours before his death he worked feverishly on the score of a Requiem Mass, commissioned by a secret stranger.
Every year, that Requiem, one of the most sublime pieces of music ever written, is performed by the Vienna Cathedral Orchestra st St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the imposing church where Mozart received his last mass.
The concert starts promptly at 11:59 pm and culminates at the time of his death. This has been one of the most beautiful moments I have experienced.
