#HistoryMonday!š°ļø Today weāre looking back at the incredible run of the iconic musical āGodspellā, which played on the Studebaker stage from July 1972 to September 1973.
Directed by Nina Faso (slide two) and featuring an almost entirely Chicago-born cast,
#Godspell wowed local critics with its brave, joyful, and vibrant interpretation of the Gospel according to St. Matthew.
However, not everyone was pleased with the production. A 1972 Chicago Tribune review written by Mary Daniels received criticism from readers over its āblasphemousā description of the musical, particularly in the chosen title: āGod has a belly laughā.
The Tribune responded by quoting Danielsā words: āNuns and priests cheer at the endā¦atheists come to āGodspellā too. Itās not the kind of show that preaches to you.ā
Another glowing Tribune review ended on a lovelier note: āThe basic feeling is that the best policy is to live, to enjoy, to appreciate. And that makes for a wonderfully happy show at the Stude...
