Three Maori MPs from Te Pati Maori have been suspended from New Zealand’s Parliament after performing a haka in protest of a bill they say threatens Indigenous rights. Co-leaders Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer were suspended for 21 days, while 21-year-old MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke was suspended for seven.
The haka was performed during the reading of a bill that would redefine the Treaty of Waitangi, a foundational agreement between the British Crown and Maori people. Critics have called the suspensions disproportionate and an attack on Maori culture, igniting broader conversations about Indigenous rights, free speech, and New Zealand’s efforts at reconciliation.
