The family of 12-year-old Jaysen Carr spoke out about the child's recent death from a brain-eating amoeba after he caught an infection in Lake Murray, South Carolina. "We don't want his death to be in vain because had we known, he wouldn't have been in it," his mother, Ebony Carr said in a news conference on Tuesday. Carr's parents said they wanted to bring awareness to the rare but often fatal brain infection caused by the Naegleria fowleri organism. The infection occurs when water is forced up the nose and is able to cross into the brain, which can happen during recreational freshwater activities.
