FOUND: After it was believed to be extinct for 5,000 years, the Leaf-toed Gecko of the Galápagos has been rediscovered!
🦎 This tiny gecko was only known on Rábida Island in the Galápagos from ancient subfossils. Measuring only about 3 inches (8 cm) as full-grown adults, these little lizards have now been spotted after their island home was freed from invasive predators, allowing them to recover.

This rediscovery was made possible by a successful, bold conservation intervention in 2011 led by Island Conservation in partnership with the Galapagos National Park, Charles Darwin Foundation, and The Raptor Center. 🟢 Restoration and rewilding continues thanks to the Island-Ocean Connection Challenge 🌊 led by islandconservation, rewild, and scripps_ocean.
